We fight and vote for placement of our officers, hoping that each one will do better than the last, passing laws that promote peace and joy and happiness. We hope that by taking away the guns, we'll stop the murders from killing. We hope that taking away the drugs will stop the dealer from dealing. We hope for medical advances to slow down age and eradicate disease. We hope against hope because we know that in a perfect world, all the good and none of the bad exists. Really, can we stop the clock from ticking? can we take away the murderer's intention? Intentions find their way to action regardless of restrictions. Time will pass. The clock will tick in sickness or in health, in beauty or disgust.
We work our fingers thin trying to make something perfect out of something that will never be. It's pointless, and yet we try. Why? We try because every soul knows that Utopia did exist, and every soul also knows that it still exists somewhere just beyond its grasp. Not all would believe it. Not all would admit it. In fact, many have even hidden it from every conscious thought. Hidden or not, actions still speak it.
Utopia was here long ago, but something went horribly wrong and broke it. One sin, one mistake and it all came crashing down. We were meant to live in this perfect world, but it was ripped away. Though it happened long ago, the disaster left a scar inside of every person whether we recognize it or not. Then, Hope came into the broken world. One man, one sacrifice, and the hope of Utopia returned. The entrance of that hope left a longing in every person whether we realize it or not.
Those with just scar, are left to long for Utopia lost. There's nothing but the hope that with work enough, a new utopia can be grown from the ashes of the first. However, those who know real hope needn't become frustrated trying to fix the unfixable. They can look up and be encouraged knowing the Utopia they desire has already been prepared for them.
The world we live in, is hopelessly broken, but the world we live in is not without hope. The answer to the brokenness is not more rules, more laws or regulations. The answer to the brokenness comes from higher up. In fact, it came from Utopia itself.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
-John 3:16
